About Luke

Luke At Work

I’m Luke Armour, digital strategist, podcaster, blogger, musician, daddy, thinker and totally not a robot. Educator. Social Media Advocate.

Currently I am an assistant professor at Kent State University in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the coordinator of Flash Communications, the student PR agency – found at Student PR.

I spent four years in the digital practice group at Fleishman-Hillard managing mobile and web projects, planning and executing social media strategy, producing podcasts and other fun stuff. As the former PR Coordinator forĀ BlogTalkRadio, I lived and breathed the digital space – from a start-up point of view. Prior to that, I worked in traditional PR for a small ad/pr agency. In 2006, I earned an MA in Communications atĀ The University of Akron, but have always had a love affair with the digital. Enthralled by the new communication tools and technologies of social media, I wrote my graduate project on Internet PR. TitledĀ Online Public Relations: Using the Internet to build and sustain relationships.Ā That has directly led me to where I am today.

I have sincere interests in listening to music as well as playing and recording music. Spent several years as the frontman/bass player for a band in NW PA, a gig I really enjoyed. Now, I spend more time playing for my own self-indulgence and stress relief.

I’m an avid (read: rabid) hockey fan and recreational player. Unfortunately, Ohio is not the most hockey-oriented state in the Union, but I can still play once a week at the local ice rink. Not surprisingly, most of the other guys that play are transplants from Canada and New England. There’s just something about lacing those skates up…

I like to travel, fool around with new technology, watch sci-fi programs, read, and write. I received my BA in Speech Communications (PR focus) fromĀ Edinboro University of PennsylvaniaĀ in 2002, lived in Alaska for a year, and moved to Ohio in 2004.

I’m passionate about public relations and digital marketing, which is why I started this blog in December 2005. My aim was to get NE Ohio up to speed about social media and the impact it has/can have on public relations. I’m fascinated by communication strategies employed by organizations, good, bad, or cryptic. Other than that, I just like to voice my opinions, spread my wings, and learn a thing or two.Ā These opinions are my own, they don’t reflect the thoughts or opinions of where I work or those with whom I work and hang out. This isĀ myĀ soapbox, but I do appreciate any comments you like to share.

  1. […] But he learned that the opposite can – and will – be true. That's exactly what organizations fear about social media. To put themselves out in the open, to be publicly criticized, to take the bad with the good for all to see is a risk they are often not willing to take. But there are people and organizations that do manage quite well using social media and embracing transparency. Transparency Works is one of my new favorite blogs. It's local (Cleveland based), thought provoking, and deals with this very topic. I've heard people say that strong brands resist openness and transparency (i.e. Google and Apple) and weak brands have nothing to lose (i.e. me). But a quick search will find Microsoft and other strong brands blogging – so that theory is weak. Chris Anderson wrote some worthy reading in Dec 05 about it. But there is such a fear of watering the brand, losing control, and dealing with the unknown. Fear is real. O'Malley also noted: "Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, 'There is nothing to fear but fear itself.' He obviously didn’t get out very much. There’s plenty to fear. The world, as you know, can be a sinister place. You hold in your pockets devices that can give you up-to-the-second bad news from around the world." […]

  2. […] I was driven to blog by many individuals. A certain professor required it, a certain blogger inspired it, but another blogger friend of mine is the standard in which I compare my part-time, starter blog to… and lets just say there is NO contest. […]
